Per Mertesacker has given Arsene Wenger some good news heading into an important month for the Gunners.

The German centre-back has been sidelined all season after requiring surgery on a knee injury before the start of the campaign.

The 32-year-old revealed on his Twitter account that he is now back in training, but it will still be a while before he is seen in first-team action once again.

ESPN report that the German international is not expected to play before the end of the year.

It will mean that with Shkodran Mustafi sidelined with a hamstring injury, Wenger will need to rely on either Gabriel or Rob Holding to replace the German alongside Laurent Koscielny over the Christmas period.

Mertesacker’s return to full fitness could coincide with Mustafi’s return however. That would give the Gunners a double boost ahead of matches against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth at the start of January when they will play the two fixtures in the space of 48 hours.
