Paul Merson believes Arsenal must do everything in their power to keep hold of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, or risk having a catastrophic effect on the club and its fans.

The Arsenal duo have entered the final 18 months of their contracts and have yet to agree fresh terms with the club’s hierarchy.

Arsene Wenger earlier today suggested that the pair will remain at the club until their contracts expire no matter what, and would risk losing them on a free transfer after the end of next season rather than sell them.

Wenger’s latest comments on the matter has not gone down too well with former Gunner Merson, who believes the fans could turn their back on the club if Ozil and Sanchez were to leave:

Talking to talkSPORT, Merson said:

‘They need to get these two players signed up.

‘They are their best players by a mile and, if they don’t sign them up, I don’t know where Arsenal go from there.

‘You wouldn’t buy a season ticket. What’s the point if you are going to sell these kinds of players?

‘It would be a worrying time for Arsenal. They pay top dollar these fans so they need to see top dollar players.’

Arsenal have no reason not to give the two players what they want, and whilst many would say ‘give them the high wages’, the club have to think about what repercussions it could have on the rest of the squad.

Ozil and Sanchez are arguably Arsenal’s two best players, but if they were rewarded with wages in the excess of £200,000-250,000-a-week, other players will try their luck and look for wages near that region.

With that being said, however, Arsenal have to roll with the times. They are financially stable and even making profit, so it’s about time they delivered the goods to the players that can bring them success in the future.

Should they lose both Sanchez and Ozil, especially on a free, then the faithful will not be too happy, me included.

Wenger and co. need to step up their game and tie these guys down to new deals as soon as possible in order to focus on the Premier League title and other silverware this season.
