Arsene Wenger will make a move for Dimitri Payet when the January transfer window opens if the Gunners are still in contention for the title and West Ham are fighting relegation, reports The Sun

The 29-year-old arrived from Ligue 1 side Marseille in summer 2015 and quickly settled and lit up the Premier League with his performances.

The France international was arguably West Ham’s top performers last season and is still seen as the club’s prized asset despite his below par displays this season.

Payet only signed a new five-and-a-half-year deal in February worth £125,000-a-week, but the creative midfielder put his future in doubt last month after hinting he may consider his options as early as January if things do not improve at West Ham.

Wenger has been a long-term admirer of Payet from his days at St. Etienne and Marseille but never made a move for his fellow countryman due to his lack of consistency.

However, having watched Payet dazzle in the Premier League last season and during Euro 2016 for France, it’s believed Wenger is now ready to make his move for the unsettled West Ham man.
