Arsenal could rekindle their interest in Chris Smalling after he faces an uncertain future at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.

The 26-year-old centre-back has been singled out for criticism by Mourinho last Sunday, with the United boss hinting Smalling, along with Luke Shaw, were both reluctant to put play for the club in their 3-1 win over Swansea due to the pair not being fit enough to participate.

As a result, Smalling, who was voted United’s Players’ Player of the season last year, faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford.

Arsenal were linked with a move for th England international before he joined United from Fulham in 2010 for £10 million, and were again rumoured to be keen to sign him when Louis van Gaal oversaw the Manchester club.

It is now thought Smalling is expected to seek talks with Mourinho following the international breaks conclusion.

So with this in mind, should Arsenal be interested in signing Smalling if Mourinho decides to put him up for sale?

Wenger could be looking to sign a new centre-back with Per Mertesacker’s future in doubt and Gabriel not settling in as well as expected.

Smalling would represent a good capture for the Gunners as he already obtains Premier League experience and would also offer healthy competition to the likes of Laurent Koscielny and new summer signing Shokdran Mustafi.
