Former Liverpool and Real Madrid winger turned BT Sport pundit Steve McManaman has said that Arsene Wenger should have signed a world-class striker in the summer window.

Arsenal bought the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Granit Xhaka for the centre-half and defensive midfielder positions whilst Lucas Perez was signed to bolster their attacking options from Deportivo in Spain.

Perez, however, has not played many games for the Gunners up top whilst Olivier Giroud, who of course was already at the club prior to this window, is yet to score or nail his place down in the Premier League this season.

That has led to Alexis Sanchez being played up front by Wenger and whilst he has scored a fair amount, McManaman feels the Gunners need more. Speaking to BT Sport he said:

‘I’ve said for years that I thought they should get a better centre-forward. They’ve brought in Lucas Perez but has hasn’t been playing. Olivier Giroud is injured. Alexis Sanchez has done well but I still don’t think it’s good enough. I think they should have bought a super-star centre-forward.’

Arsenal failed to hit the back of the net in a 0-0 draw against Middlesbrough at the weekend but the point still kept them level on points at the top of the league, behind Man. City on goal difference.
