Arsenal set to open contract talks with defender to fend off European interest

|

Full-back Hector Bellerin is set to be offered an improved contract at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal seek to hold off interest from some top European clubs, according to the Independent.

The 21-year-old has appeared in every Premier League game for Arsene Wenger’s side this season, as well as their two UEFA Champions League matches, and looks set to be rewarded for his good form with an improved deal in North London.

Bellerin’s current deal runs out in three years’ time but, because of interest from former club Barcelona and Premier League leaders Manchester City, Arsenal know that a better deal is a must if they want to keep the Spanish defender at the club.

Since making his competitive debut for the Gunners in a League Cup tie at West Bromwich Albion back in 2013, Bellerin has played 81 times for Wenger’s side, with his best season coming last time out, where he appeared 44 times in all competitions to help Arsenal finish second in the Premier League.

Interest in Bellerin is hardly surprising given his performances in the last 18 months.

Pep Guardiola’s City reportedly tried to sign the defender over the summer and, although it was to no avail that time around, it remains to be seen whether they up the pressure in future transfer windows.

A new deal for Bellerin, which is due to be discussed after the international break, could go some way to thwarting and minimising that interest.
