Arsenal are in no rush to extend veteran centre-half Per Mertesacker’s contract and will make a decision on his future closer to the end of the season, according to The Telegraph.

The German defender has been a key man in North London for a number of seasons but is currently on the treatment table after picking up a serious injury in pre-season.

Mertesacker is out of contract at the end of the current campaign and as such it remains to be seen just where he will play his football next season.

The former Werder Bremen enforcer’s injury has played a role in Arsenal signing his compatriot Shkodran Mustafi over the course of the summer, with the former Valencia man forming an immediate partnership with Laurent Koscielny.

With Gabriel Paulista and young gun Rob Holding also in Arsene Wenger’s options at centre-back, Mertesacker could well struggle to win a regular place in the Gunners team in 2016-17 when he is back from injury.
