Former Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has stated that whoever replaces Arsene Wenger in the Emirates Stadium hotseat will face an impossible task.

The veteran French coach moved to the North London club from Japanese club Grampus Eight in 1996 and has revitalised the side’s fortunes over the last two decades.

Wenger has won three Premier League titles and six FA Cups as manager of the Gunners, while also overseeing the club’s move to the Emirates Stadium.

With the former Monaco boss being in charge at the Premier League club for so long, talk of his retirement has started to do the rounds in recent times.

A section of the Arsenal fans have also called for Wenger to step down from his managerial role and let another coach have a crack at winning major silverware.

Dein has stated that whoever replaces the long-serving boss will have a thankless task on their hands to replicate the success that the Frenchman has had over time.

“He won’t be a difficult to act to follow… he will be an impossible act to follow,” Dein told Reuters.

“He’s been at the club for 20 seasons and every year has been in the Champions League (since 1998-99) so to anyone wanting to change the manager I say to them that the next person is highly unlikely to do that.

“I had the good fortune to have known Arsene for eight years before he became Arsenal manager so knew what he was like.

“The easiest thing is just to change – the hard thing is getting somebody better. Who could you get that is better?”
