Wenger to field unconvincing centre-half pairing for Liverpool clash

|

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has consigned himself to not signing a new defender before the new Premier League season starts this weekend and will field Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal at the heart of his rearguard against Liverpool, according to The Daily Star.

The Gunners face a defensive crisis, with both Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista set to spend a number of months on the sidelines after serious injuries were picked up in pre-season.

With Laurent Koscielny not match fit after an extended break following his exertions at Euro 2016, the Emirates Stadium side are short of options at centre-half.

A move for either Jonny Evans or Shkodran Mustafi is being touted in the British press, but the latest report suggests that the French manager will not be rushed into signing a new player.

As such, the relatively inexperienced Chambers and left-back Monreal are set to be given the nod and will have a job on their hands to contain an able Liverpool attack.
