Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that the club are working hard to sign new players but there is no guarantee of summer recruits.

The North London club are believed to be in the market for a new central defender and a striker, but as yet midfielder Granit Xhaka remains the only high-profile addition of note.

A deal for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi is being touted in the press, while the Emirates Stadium side have been linked with a host of new centre forwards also.

Wenger has stated that Arsenal’s current injury list is hurting the side’s chances and pledged to spend money this summer if the right players became available.

“We need players back – I have said many times that we are working very hard to get one or two players in,” Sky Sports quote the Frenchman as saying.

“There is not much time left, but it has to make sense and be quality. It’s about identifying the players and getting the right availability.”

Arsenal’s fans have become somewhat dejected with the club’s lack of expenditure, especially as other Premier League title rivals have splurged this summer.

Boos rang around the Emirates Stadium after yesterday’s defeat to Liverpool, with high hopes of significant signings before the window closes at the end of August.
