New Arsenal signing Shkodran Mustafi has stated that he has moved to the North London club to improve as a player.

The Germany international has been added to Arsene Wenger’s squad and will provide much-needed defensive support this season.

Mustafi’s potential switch from Valencia has been touted in the Spanish and British press consistently all summer long but a deal to land the former Everton youth player has finally come to fruition.

The former Sampdoria enforcer will compete with the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista for a starting berth in the Arsenal side.

Mustafi has stated that when leaving the Mestalla it was important to sign for a club that could help him progress as a player – and he feels that Arsenal is the right place for this to happen.

“When you change team, obviously you try to always make a step forward,” he told the club’s official website.

“I think coming here I’ve made a step forward, because Arsenal is a big club with big players and a great manager.

“For me I think the most important thing was if I made a change, could I learn something? Was it going to be good for my development? I think that being here now is going to help me grow as a player.”

Mustafi was part of the Germany squad that won the World Cup two years ago and will bring a lot of experience and leadership to the Emirates Stadium.
