According to reports from London Evening Standard, Arsenal are unlikely to continue pursuing Jose Fonte because they believe the Southampton skipper will complete a move to Manchester United.

The 32-year-old has emerged as one of the best defenders in the Premier League since gaining promotion from the Championship with the Saints in 2012.

And the 6 foot 2 centre-half further consolidated that reputation this summer by lifting the Euro 2016 title with Portugal, who he has represented on 16 occasions.

According to LES, Arsenal had expressed an interest in signing Fonte amid a host of injury problems at the back, with Per Mertesacker potentially sidelined until December.

However, they’re unlikely to continue a pursuit of the former Crystal Palace man, believing he’s set to sign for Premier League title rivals Manchester United instead.

Although Fonte has been offered a new contract by the Saints, he appears interested in sealing a move away from the south coast.
