Arsenal have turned their attention to Villarreal centre-half Mateo Musacchio as a possible alternative to Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi, according to The Telegraph.

Arsene Wenger’s men are frantically looking for a new defender to bolster their options, with injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista highlighting the need for a new face.

An approach for Mustafi looks destined to fail following Valencia’s public statement that the Germany international will not be sold this summer.

Musacchio was an integral part of the Villarreal side that finished fourth in La Liga last term and is well-respected in the Spanish game having featured for the Yellow Submarine since 2010.

The 25-year-old Argentina international played alongside Gabriel for the El Madrigal outfit and last season partnered new Manchester United defender Eric Bailly.

Musacchio would be an experienced and competent option for Arsenal but it remains to be seen just how much the South American could cost.
