Arsenal are weighing up a shock move for Newcastle United centre-half Chancel Mbemba as a solution to their defensive concerns, Here Is The City report.

The Gunners are light on options at the heart of their rearguard following injuries to Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista, and a new defender is believed to be one of Arsene Wenger’s priorities this summer.

A reported attempt to land German World Cup winner Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia has been met with opposition from the La Liga club, leaving the North London side to turn to other options.

Mbemba moved to the North East outfit from Anderlecht last summer and initially looked like a promising player in a struggling team.

The DR Congo international was unable to prevent the Tynesiders from being demoted to the second-tier of English football, however.

Although Mbemba looks comfortable on the ball and has impressive physical attributes, whether or not a team that is hoping to win major silverware, such as Arsenal, should be buying defenders from a relegated side is a pertinent question.
