Arsenal are said to be running the rule over Roma defender Kostas Manolas, with The Daily Mail stating that the Gunners had a scout in attendance at the Stadio Olimpico for last night’s Champions League qualifier between the Italian side and Porto.

The North London outfit are short of options at the heart of their defence currently, with Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista out of action for the foreseeable future.

Laurent Koscielny missed the first game of the new campaign but returned for the 0-0 draw against Leicester City to offer a reprieve.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Valencia centre-half Shkodran Mustafi but with no deal agreed as yet and the La Liga side thought to be reluctant to sell the German, Arsene Wenger may have to consider alternatives.

Greece international Manolas has impressed in the Italian capital since joining the Giallorossi and was part of the team that finished third in Serie A last season.

However, it remains to be seen just how positive the scout report on the defender will be, after Roma lost 3-0 to Porto last night at home.
