According to reports from Mirror Football, Arsenal have made a ‘surprise’ enquiry to sign Monaco defender Marcel Tisserand.

The 23-year-old can operate at right-back or centre-half and is being lined up as a potential alternative to Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi – who could set the club back a staggering £50million.

The one-cap Congo international impressed on loan at Toulouse last season, making 33 Ligue 1 appearances for the French outfit, and also featured for parent club Monaco last weekend.

According to Mirror Football, La Liga club Espanyol were hoping to sign Tisserand, but the deal has been put on hold whilst the defender waits to discover whether Arsenal’s enquiry will turn into anything concrete.

Of course, Arsene Wenger’s search for extra bodies at the back comes amid an injury crisis, with Per Mertesacker facing four months on the sidelines and Gabriel Paulista also ruled out for the coming weeks.

That saw Wenger field inexperienced duo Calum Chambers and Rob Holding against Liverpool on the Premier League’s opening weekend, but Laurent Koscienly returned to action to face Leicester City last Saturday.

Here’s a look at Tisserand in action:
