Arsenal have confirmed on their official website that defender Calum Chambers will spend the 2016-17 season on loan with Premier League rivals Middlesbrough.

The young English defender looks to have a bright future in the game and has impressed at the Emirates Stadium since moving to London from Southampton.

However, the summer signing of Shkodran Mustafi means that Arsene Wenger now has four experienced international centre-halves in his squad and that playing time was likely to be a commodity for Chambers if he stayed with the Gunners.

The England international started Arsenal’s first game of the new season, a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool, but was subsequently dropped from the team upon Koscielny’s return to availability.

Rob Holding has also been selected ahead of Chambers and as such a move to the newly promoted Teeside outfit for the 2016-17 campaign appears to make sense for all parties involved.

Arsenal will hope that Chambers plays regular football with Aitor Karanka’s men and returns to North London a more-rounded player.
