Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may well be ready to solve the club’s defensive problems by playing holding midfielder Francis Coquelin at centre-half in the interim.

The Gunners are set to be without Per Mertesacker for the start of the new season, with the experienced defender picking up a knee injury and believed to have a rehabilitation period of a couple of months.

With other options also struggled for fitness before the start of the new Premier League season next month, the Emirates Stadium faithful are urging their manager to dip into the transfer market and sign a new defender.

However, a video released by Jack Wilshere that is published on Goal shows the England midfielder talking to team-mate Francis Coquelin – with the French enforcer revealing that he had been playing at centre-half in Arsenal pre-season training.

With plenty of options for the Gunners in the centre of midfield, using Coquelin in defence could well be a stop-gap solution but is far from ideal when Arsenal play against the top teams.
