Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger may well be forced to sign a defender this summer after news was broken that Per Mertesacker is set to be sidelined for as long as five months, Sky Sports report.

The German centre-half picked up a knee ailment in a recent pre-season clash against Lens, with the initial prognosis not looking good.

It has been confirmed that Mertesacker will face a lengthy stint on the rehabilitation trail and it is now likely that the veteran will not be at Wenger’s disposal again until the new year.

With Gabriel suffering from tonsillitis and Laurent Koscielny on leave after an extensive summer playing at Euro 2016, Arsenal look very light at the heart of their rearguard – and the new season is only weeks away.

The Gunners have signed prodigious youngster Rob Holding and have Calum Chambers fit and able to play, but the North London club will surely want a more established option at the heart of their rearguard for the new season opener next month.
