Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is on the verge of returning to Italian club Roma on loan for the 2016-17 season, with the Serie A giants set to have the option to land the Poland international permanently included in the deal, Gianluca Di Marzio claims.

The stopper was initially Arsene Wenger’s first choice between the sticks at the Emirates Stadium, but questionable form saw him demoted and David Ospina given an opportunity in 2015.

The signing of Petr Cech last summer pushed Szczesny further down the pecking order and he spent last season on loan in the Italian capital.

With no change in the situation in North London, the Polish custodian is set to return to the Stadio Olimpico for 2016-17, where he is likely to receive more regular first-team football.

Roma will also have an option to sign Szczesny permanently next summer after the loan deal concludes, with the proposed fee set to be €16 million (£13.4 million).
