Arsenal made contact with Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi’s agent last week, according to journalist Emanuele Giulianelli.
The Gunners are facing a defensive crisis before the new season has already started, with Per Mertesacker set to be sidelined for a number of months after a knee injury.
Add to this the fact that Laurent Koscielny is still on summer leave after Euro 2016 and Gabriel has tonsillitis and it remains to be seen who will start at the back for Arsenal in the opening game of the 2016-17 campaign.
Mustafi has been a regular in the Germany national squad over recent years and continues to impress for Spanish side Valencia.

Talk that he could be tempted away from the Mestalla continues to circle in the European press and as can be seen above, Giulianelli believes that Arsenal are one of the teams that are interested in the no-nonsense enforcer.
With Mertesacker ageing anyway, Mustafi would be an impressive addition at the Emirates Stadium.
