Mateo MusacchioIt’s not even the end of May and we are already seeing the Arsenal transfer rumour mill turning.

The latest name to be linked with a move to the Emirates is Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio, who is also reportedly being pursued by Roma.

The 25-year-old missed the first-half of the season as he recovered from a long-term leg injury he suffered in April last year, but made a big impact on his return to the side, helping Villarreal qualify for the Champions League next season.

Reports in Italy are now suggesting Arsenal and Roma are keeping tabs on Musacchio, having pulled out some impressive performances for Villarreal this season.

Roma appear to be front runners for the Argentine centre-back’s signature, but Arsenal will now attempt to seek contact with the player’s agent ahead of a proposed move this summer.

Musacchio has made well over 200 appearances for Villarreal since making the move to Spain from River Plate in 2009, and has a contract at El Madrigal until 2018.

Arsenal fans will be desperate to see a defender brought in this summer, with many believing Per Mertesacker is on his last legs and Gabriel is merely a squad member rather than a regular in the side.

However, would the potential signing of Musacchio be an upgrade to what we currently have at Arsenal?
