Mikel ArtetaMikel Arteta finally put pen to paper on a new one-year deal, which could signal the end of Arsene Wenger’s reported pursuit of a defensive midfielder this summer.

The Spanish midfielder agreed to sign on for another year months ago but only officially signed on the dotted line today, ending speculation of a move away from the Emirates this summer.

The 33-year-old, who missed much of last through injury, supposedly had lucrative offers from Spain, but opted to remain at Arsenal.

However, with Arteta regaining his fitness and signing an extension, it could mean Wenger will not bother adding another defensive midfielder to the squad, as the former Everton man will be viewed as a ‘new signing’.

With that being said, and Arteta signing a new deal, should Wenger still look to acquire a holding midfielder this summer? Or will the Spaniard’s return to the squad be enough reinforcement in midfielder?

Regardless of this news, I believe Wenger still needs to bring in a defensive midfielder this summer. Arteta is decent but should he and Francis Coquelin be both unavailable, we will be short of options.

This could be the worst news for Arsenal as they really need new blood and wining players not in their mid- thirtieth .
