Sergi SamperArsenal are ready to trigger the £8.4 million release clause of Barcelona’s Sergi Samper this summer, according to reports in Spain.

Mundo Deportivo claim the Gunners have been keeping a close eye on the Spain Under-21 international and are now ready to activate his release clause.

Arsene Wenger is supposedly looking to add a defensive midfielder to his squad this summer, and sees the 20-year-old Barca starlet as a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta, who is now 33 and recently sign a one-year extension at the club.

Wenger has been monitoring Samper since 2011 and attempted to lure him to the Emirates last summer.

But the Frenchman may be in luck this time around as it is believed the defensive midfielder feels his chances of featuring for the Barcelona first-team this season are slim to none, with Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano and Sergi Roberto all ahead of him in the pecking order.

Wenger has worked his magic before on several of Barca’s youngsters, acquiring Cesc Fabregas, Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral in the past, and Samper could be the next one coming in – if reports are to be believed.

He has told Wenger to piss off several times already and will do it again. He wants to make it at Camp Nou. Will probably go on loan. So keep on dreaming and stop tapping up La Masia players Wenger. Hypocrite!
