This is a strange transfer for Arsenal to make

marco ameliaArsenal are believed to be in the market for a new striker and a defensive midfielder this summer.

But it appears the Gunners have other ideas – signing another goalkeeper. Yes, you read it right, another goalkeeper.

Apparently, Arsenal are close to sealing a deal to bring in Perugia’s Marco Amelia – even though they managed to land Petr Cech from Chelsea earlier in the month.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Amelia is on his way to the Emirates to replace Wojciech Szczesny, who has signed for Roma on a season-long loan, with the retired Italy international hinting at a preliminary agreement with Arsene Wenger’s side:

‘Arsenal? I signed a confidentiality agreement, so I cannot say anything.

‘I’m still young for a goalie, I’m 33 years old and who knows in the future.’

Arsenal already have Cech, David Ospina and even young Damian Martinez on the books this season, so it’s strange to see the club attempting to bring in Amelia – unless of course Wenger has other ideas in mind for the Colombia international, who has been linked with a move to Everton, and the 22-year-old Argentine.

Should Amelia arrive with Ospina still on the books then many will question the signing of the experienced Italian.

However, if the Colombian goalkeeper follows in Szczesny’s footsteps and seals a season-long loan move away from the Emirates then the deal would make sense, as Amelia would demand less game time, while Ospina could star in most Premier League sides.

In any case, I don’t believe this proposed transfer is a necessity and, personally, I would like to Ospina stay at the club and challenge Cech.

If Ospina commands a transfer fee and Amelia comes in free, Arsenal may be tempted to do business and recoup some of the investment on Cech. This would be typical Arsenal reasoning, don’t you think?
