Felipe MeloFelipe Melo wants to leave Galatasaray, putting Arsenal on red alert.

Arsene Wenger is believed to be looking to add a defensive midfielder to his squad this summer to offer healthy competition to Francis Coquelin, with Mathieu Flamini thought to be on his way to Galatasaray and Mikel Arteta the only other recognised holding midfielder in the first-team able to challenge the 23-year-old Frenchman.

Arsenal have been linked with a few midfielders already this summer, with Morgan Schneiderlin heavily tipped to join the Gunners. However, the Frenchman chose United instead, while William Carvalho has been ruled out for three months with a fractured tibia, thus ending their pursuit.

But Melo, 32, has been on Arsenal’s radar for a few seasons now and could finally make a swoop for him after his latest admission.

The experienced Brazilian only has one-year left on his current deal at Galatasaray, but he wants to leave the Istanbul club for family reasons:

‘My family are not happy in Turkey, they don’t want to stay here. It’s a nice place, but we’ve found it difficult here.

‘Before I wear a shirt, my family must be convinced, but if I don’t find an agreement with another club then I’ll stay here.

‘As long as I’m here I’ll give everything for this shirt.’

If Arsenal are looking for an experienced defensive midfielder who is aggressive and gets stuck in, then Melo is the man they should sign.

The Brazilian isn’t exactly the most gifted football, but he has a high-work rate and not afraid to put a tackle in, something we could do with in our midfield.

For me, Melo wouldn’t be ahead of Coquelin in the pecking order, but he would be a good option to have and would also add depth to the squad.

He would cost no more than £5 million, but Cruzerio and Inter Milan are also reportedly keen on him, so Wenger will have to act fast if he is on his radar.
