Were Arsenal right to release him?

DiabySo Abou Diaby has been released by Arsenal after nine years at the club.

The French midfielder arrived at Arsenal from Auxerre in 2006 which much promised and was even tipped by many to become Patrick Vieira’s successor.

However, a plague of injuries ensued after the 29-year-old fractured his ankle in 2006 against Sunderland. Diaby never truly recovered from this tackle from Dan Smith and the midfielder was rarely seen donning the famous red and white of Arsenal on a regular basis.

Diaby only made just one appearance for the club last season, playing 67 minutes in the 2-1 Capital One Cup defeat to Southampton in September. And in total, the Frenchman featured a mere 180 times for the Gunners in nine years.

Many believe he could have gone on to become an Arsenal great if he wasn’t prone to injury, while others didn’t make much of the lanky midfielder.

On hearing the news, are you relieved that Arsenal decided to finally get Diaby off their books, or was it the wrong move by the club?

Sad to see a potentially great player ruined by a non-entity. That initial injury was possibly the cause of all the others. Best of luck.
