Has is been a successful season for Arsenal?

Arsenal FA CupSo the 2014/15 season is finally over, and Arsenal managed to finish in third place in the Premier League and retain the FA Cup for the second year succession after hammering Aston Villa 4-0 at Wembley last Saturday.

But has it been a successful season for Arsene Wenger’s men, or could they have done better?

Despite a disappointing start to the Premier League campaign, the Gunners managed to obtain third spot with 75 points and finished four behind runners-up Manchester City and 12 adrift newly crowned champions Chelsea. Last season, however, we ended up in four position with 79 points and were only seven behind Manchester City, who won the Premier League. So although we finished with four less points this season, we did climb one place higher this one, which can only be seen as an improvement. But while some will be delighted with this progression, others would have expected the squad to seriously challenge for the title and be closer to Chelsea.

As for the domestic cup competitions, well we got knocked out in the Third Round of the Capital One Cup by Southampton at the Emirates – although Wenger gives the youth a go in this competition, we should’ve have one better than what we did. But we did manage to retain the FA Cup for the second season in a row, and this is a feat in itself – only five teams have ever accomplished this (The Wanderers, Spurs, Blackburn, Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal).

As for the Champions League, well we’ve tried to conquer this over the past 17 years or so and the closest we’ve ever come came in 2006 when we reached the final and lost to Barca. This season in Europe we should have progressed further than the Last 16 Round against Monaco. I’m not saying we would have won it, but we could have performed much better than we did.

All in all, I think it was a decent for Arsenal, and a probably a successful one as we picked up another trophy. However, we could have done better in Europe and should’ve given Chelsea a run for their money – hopefully next season we will!

No, the season for me it was not successful. Wenger did not buy enough players for the season to be successful. We needed a holding midfielder, another centre back, and playing a different style of soccer, when fielding a week team, I mean parking the bus. We lost so many points at the beginning of the season, after 8 games we were 11 points behind Chelsea.
I have been coaching for 29 years and always preach to my players: ” offense wins you games , defense wins you championships”.
