Arsenal are keen on bringing Petr Cech to the Emirates this summer, with the Czech goalkeeper wanting the move to occur.
The Gunners are ready to offer £11 million to Chelsea for the 33-year-old, but Jose Mourinho has other ideas.
Although Mourinho would allow Cech to depart Stamford Bridge, the Portuguese coach is reluctant to see him go to Arsenal. So much so that the only way he would sanction it is if he gets a Gunner in return, with Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on his agenda.
Now I don’t know about you, but this seems to be a transfer that may not be worth the aggro or time.
Arsenal simply want to sign Cech, but Jose wants to play hardball and throw a spanner in the works. I can understand Mourinho for making it difficult, but if Cech is not going to feature regularly next season – which he’s not – and taking into account the Czech shot-stopper has been at Chelsea for 11 years, Jose should respect his wishes and let him join the club he wants too.
It does sound a little hypocritical coming from an Arsenal fan, but I don’t believe Chelsea losing Cech would deter their title hopes, nor would it weaken them – especially if they replace him.
Signing Cech does strengthen us somewhat, but we need a few more additions to become a serious force next season, both in the Premier League and in Europe, not just an experienced goalkeeper.
Arsenal will not even think about a swap deal, so Mourinho can forget that. If he’s not willing to sell Cech outright then the Gunners should look elsewhere rather than waste their time.
