theo walcottTheo Walcott is fighting for his Arsenal future, says Arsene Wenger.

The 25-year-old has made just nine appearances in all competitions this season having returned to the squad from a long-term injury before the turn of the New Year.

However, Walcott now faces ‘a big challenge’ to cement a regular place in Wenger’s side with Alexis Sanchez in impressive form. The £33 million Chilean has taken Walcott’s position and is regarded as not only a starter for the Gunners, but their best performer so far this season.

But after seeing Sanchez limp off during Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Leicester City last Tuesday, Walcott, who is no longer guaranteed a first-team spot at the Emirates, could show in today’s FA Cup game against Middlesbrough what the Gunners have been missing and, more importantly for the forward, give Wenger something to think about in the remaining months of the season:

‘Walcott can score goals but Sanchez has had the biggest offensive impact up to now. Theo’s fitness is there now but we will see game by game.’

So with that being said, is Theo’s future at Arsenal in serious doubt? I don’t necessarily think so. Yes, Sanchez has been fantastic since his arrival from Barcelona over the summer and is most effective in Walcott’s wide position out on the right, but the England international, I believe, performs best as a centre-forward – the role he wants to play in.

So if Sanchez is Wenger’s first-choice right winger/forward, then perhaps the Frenchman should consider moving Walcott upfront in upcoming seasons.

Walcott hasn’t lived up to expectations and is somewhat of an inconsistent performer. Some may say it’s time for him to go and we could get a decent sum of money for his potential sale, but he is a good player when he wants to show it, unfortunately he doesn’t do this often. But Wenger shouldn’t rush into anything and unless of course the Frenchman has a ready replacement in mind.
