Arsene WengerArsene Wenger has reportedly told the Arsenal board he needs to sign TWO players before the January transfer window closes.

Wenger did some business over the summer, acquiring up to five players, including Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy, but Arsenal find themselves sitting fifth in the Premier League table at the halfway stage of the season.

And it’s been suggested, despite publicly playing down the need for new signings, the Frenchman wants to bring in at least two new recruits this month to secure another top four finish.

A number of players in different positions have been tipped for a move to the Emirates, but with what we’ve seen so far, Wenger truly needs to sign a defender and holding midfielder.

Debuchy faces up to three months out with a dislocated shoulder, and with only Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker the only two recognisable centre-backs in the current squad, there are very few options for Wenger at the back.

Another area which needs improving is the midfield – the defensive side rather than the attacking options. Wenger has had to rely on Mathieu Flamini and more recently Francis Coquelin this season, with Mikel Arteta struggling with injuries. But Wenger needs to find someone who can claim the holding midfield role for the long-term, with Coquelin not viewed by many as the answer and both Flamini and Arteta getting on.

Several names in both these positions have been linked and rumours continue to emerge and spread.

But who should Wenger’s two signings be?

Which centre-back (defender) and holding midfielder should the Frenchman realistically consider bringing in with the resources he reportedly has (£20 million)?
