Winston ReidArsene Wenger has been given the light by Sam Allardyce to sign Winston Reid after the Hammers boss conceded that the centre-back is highly likely to leave when his contract expires in June.

Arsenal’s defensive frailties have come into question once again this season and Wenger is expected to bring in reinforcements before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Reid has reportedly been on the Frenchman’s radar in recent weeks and with negotiations over a new deal stalling, Wenger could force Allardyce’s hand by selling the New Zealand international this month rather than lose him on a free.

On the subject of Reid extending his stay at Upton Park, Allardyce said:

‘It’s highly unlikely Winston is going to sign for us based on what people have said to me.’

He added:

‘There is no future for Winston Reid at West Ham at the moment as his contract finishes on 30 June. He hasn’t said he is or isn’t going to sign.

‘You would err on the back that he isn’t, by the feel and look of it, at this moment in time.’

Arsenal had previously been linked with a £4 million move for Reid and after hearing the player has no future at West Ham by Big Sam himself, Wenger must step up his pursuit before other clubs express their interest in the 26-year-old.

He may not be the fans’ first-choice of centre-backs to come in this January, but bringing in a player who already has Premier League experience under his belt and worth so little makes great business sense, in my opinion.
