Arsene WengerIt’s what we’ve been waiting to hear, Arsene Wenger is ready to splash the cash to rectify Arsenal’s season when the January transfer window opens after admitting he’s isn’t ‘scared’ to spend – but will he?

Wenger showed over the summer that Arsenal can compete with the big boys for the top players and splash the cash after signing Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, Calum Chambers and Mathieu Debuchy for a total of around the £80 million.

However, being praised for those captures – especially that of Sanchez – Wenger has been heavily criticised for not bolstering his defence, and the Frenchman has now hinted that he will table an offer for a centre-back suited to his philosophy.

Speaking ahead of their Premier League game against Liverpool later today, Wenger said:

‘There is a huge difference between the perception that people have of me and [the reality]: I’m not scared to spend money.

‘If you go out with me one night, you will understand that.’

He added:

‘What I don’t like is to spend money that I don’t have.

‘Now I have money so no problem spending it at all. What I fought against was spending money that would have put the future of the club in danger.’

We have heard this all before but before to Wenger he has made some impressive signings in the last two summers, albeit in the attacking department.

Arsenal surely have money in the bank and the board will hopefully give him the funds he needs to improve the squad this January.

But we’ve heard these words come out of Wenger’s mouth before and he doesn’t really like to do business half way into the season. Fingers crossed he finds the centre-back he’s looking for and delivers what he has promised us.
