Was Wenger right to turn down the chance to sign this man?

VidicArsene Wenger turned down the chance to sign former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic, according to yesterday’s Sun.

The paper claimed that the Gunners were offered the services of Vidic last week, but Wenger rejected the proposal and will supposedly look elsewhere when the January transfer window opens.

The 33-year-old Serbian left Old Trafford in the summer after his deal expired and signed a three-year deal with Inter Milan.

Vidic has played nine of Inter’s 16 Serie A matches so far (16 in total including European games).

However, Roberto Mancini prefers to play the pairing of Juan Jesus and Andrea Ranocchia and is currently out-of-favour with the Italian. And despite his agent Silvano Martina insisting he will remain at the club, Vidic may be allowed to leave on short-term deal if the right offer comes in this January.

Arsenal have struggled with injuries and options at the back this season, so much so that Wenger has resorted to playing Mathieu Debuchy alongside Per Mertesacker in the centre-back role.

Wenger is under pressure by the Emirates faithful to sort out the side’s defensive frailties and although the Frenchman has hinted at buying a defender is the right deal popped up, many have heard him say the same phrase and not delivered.

But was Nemanja Vidic the man Wenger should have brought in for defensive cover? I believe so.

The ex-Serbia international was arguably one of the best centre-backs the Premier League has seen in the past couple of years and although he isn’t getting any younger, Vidic’s experience and strength would have been invaluable.

I’m not saying we should have signed him on a permanent deal, but a temporary one, until the end of the season, would have made great business sense – acquiring a top defender for next to nothing!

He is a commanding figure, a leader and someone with a winning mentality and, most importantly, would have done a job for us at least until the end of the campaign.

This is of course just my opinion, but what do you think?
