Arsenal on verge of Suarez capture

|

Mario SuarezWell the January transfer window opens tomorrow, so expect to see rumours fly left, right and centre in the next four weeks.

As we all know, Arsenal have already been linked with a horde of players in several different positions, but the two that need addressing during the transfer window is the defence and defensive side of the midfield pack.

Many of the Emirates faithful and pundit alike believe Arsene Wenger needs to strengthen the centre of his defence and add a holding midfielder to his current squad, with only Mathieu Flamini and Francis Coquelin for Wenger to call on.

Morgan Schneiderlin has been heavily tipped to join Arsenal in recent weeks, but Wenger appears to be keeping his options open as the Southampton midfielder will not come cheap. And should Wenger not decide to swoop in for Schneiderlin, or fail in his attempt to bring him to the Emirates, the Frenchman will make a move for Mario Suarez.

The Gunners are close to signing the out-of-favour Atletico Madrid midfielder, according to reports in Spain.

The 27-year-old made 16 starts for Atletico in La Liga last season, but has only managed six so far and has started just the once in the club’s last five La Liga matches (playing 90 minutes out of a possible 450 available).

Suarez helped the club reach the Champions League final last season as well as win the La Liga title, but has fallen out-of-favour with Diego Simeone.

Several players are ahead of him in the pecking order, including the likes of Gabi, Tiago, Raul Garcia and Saul Niguez, and it is thought that Suarez is looking to move on.

Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda believes Suarez ‘will almost certainly go in the winter transfer window’, and if this proves to be the case then Wenger will almost certainly consider a move for the Spaniard as he looks to bolster his midfield options and secure Champions League football for a 17th straight year.

Suarez is contracted to Atletico until summer 2017 and is valued by Transfermrkt at £8.8 million.
