Petar StojanvicDespite signing Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez to enhance our attack, our side still lacks defensive reinforcements and is still fragile. So there is no wonder why the Gunners are being linked with defenders this January. Virgil van Dijk of Celtic and Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar are reportedly on Arsene Wenger’s list and Slovenian defender Petar Stojanovic is the latest name to have been mentioned with the north London club.

According to Slovenian site EKIPA 24, Arsenal sent scouts to watch the 19-year-old against Chelsea in midweek where he impressed.

Manchester United and Manchester City representatives were thought to be having a look at the youngster during the game also, so there could potentially be a battle between the three Premier League clubs to land Stojanovic.

Stojanovic is valued at around £600,000 and is contracted to Maribor until 2017.

Although he may be regarded as a hot prospect in Slovenia, perhaps a move for a defender so young isn’t the answer for our defensive frailties. Many Gooners will want Wenger to target a more experienced defender, one who can challenge Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny for a place in the starting line-up.
