WilshereLast night saw England beat Switzerland 2-0 thanks to a brace from new Gunner Danny Welbeck. And although this was promising to see from an Arsenal viewpoint, another sight to behold was one of Jack Wilshere’s performance in a deep-lying midfield role.

And following an impressive display in this new role for England, could the 22-year-old be Arsenal’s answer to their defensive midfield problem?

Wilshere has been deployed in a number of midfield positions by Arsene Wenger in the past and despite being a centre-midfielder, Wilshere has struggled to perform alongside Aaron Ramsey.

It is no secret that we crave a defensive midfielder as Mikel Arteta s not natural in this position, while Mathieu Flamini cannot be relied on week in, week out. Wenger was believed to be in the market this summer for a holding midfielder, but the Frenchman was unable to bring one in.

But Wilshere’s display for the Three Lions last night may have Wenger rethinking his plans for the England international.

Can he do a job for Arsenal in this position though?

In my opinion, I believe he can. He has all the characteristics of making that position his own this season for the Gunners.

Not only does he love to get stuck in and tackle, but he has the technical ability, awareness and passing range to cause problems for opposing teams as well as do a job for us when we don’t have the ball.

In the advanced midfield roles we have the likes of Santi Cazorla, Mesut Ozil, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alexis Sanchez and Ramsey, so the chances of Wilshere playing higher up the pitch as he would like to look very slim indeed.

The least Wenger could do is give Wilshere a shot in the deep-lying midfield position and see what transpires. I’m sure it will provide positive results and see Jack playing more regularly which we would all like to see. It would be a shame to see him sitting on the bench for the majority of the season as he does have the ability to change games, and perhaps he could do that in a deeper role for us this season.
