Who should Wenger replace Vermaelen with?

Mats HummelsThomas Vermaelen was sold to Barcelona yesterday for a fee of £15 million.

Although it was sad to see the 28-year-old leave, there will be no grudges towards the Belgian for deciding to call it quits at the Emirates after the season he had for us. And to receive £15 million from his sale is pretty decent also, especially with the player only having a year left run on his contract.

But with Vermaelen gone, Arsenal are now in need of a replacement.

Arsene Wenger only has Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny to call upon and should one of them be unavailable for any reason then we will have a serious problem on our hands, particularly if it turns out to be a long-term one.

We managed to bring in Calum Chambers for back-up, but can we rely on a fairly experienced 19-year-old to hold down the fort? I don’t think so.

So to be honest, Wenger MUST, in my opinion of course, bring in a centre-back before the transfer window shuts, otherwise we could be in trouble.

But who should Arsene Wenger go for?

I personally would go all out for Mat Hummels, as the German is a robust centre-back who reads the game well and boasts a lot of experience at 25.

Hummels would also challenge both Koscielny and Mertesacker for a starting position and this is what we need in our squad, healthy competition.

The German international does still have three years left on his deal at Dortmund and would cost somewhere between £25-30 million, but we have money to spend and should continue to splash the cash on top players to strengthen our side, and Hummels is certainly one of them.

Hummels for me, but who do you think Wenger should attempt to replace Vermaelen for?

As the left back position is not covered properly now we need a left footed central back we also is able to play on the left back position. candidates: Rojo, Nastasic, Ogbonna, Agger and Chiriches.

bring back jenks on the right wing ,play chambers in the centre and spend the money on a central defencive midfielder .

We already replaced him with Chambers who has looked very poised and capable so far. We should be buying a specialist DM instead of putting Calum there.

Hummels‚ingo Martinez or even go for liam moore- young and looks brilliant.

Vincent Kompany is dying to get away from Na$ri.

Chambers is a Utility player who can play Right back and centre-Half, possibly a DM too, but we need a specialist DM, and a right back since we now only have Gibbs and Monreal there. Utility players are exposed to more knocks so we need a centre-half for sure, preferably one who can cover left back too. A DM who can cover for centre-back is good too.

We also need a Captain who will be playing game in and game out, not something Arteta is likely to do. Mertesacker is the obvious candidate.

Agger is a steal then we can spend big o a DM I would love Kadeira but I don’t think it will happen

I think that we can assume koscielny and bfg will remain as the first choice centre back pairing for the new season due to the success we had with them. So regardless of how much money we now have to spend I highly doubt Wenger will spend 25-30 mil on a centre back who will be part of a rotation policy at the club.
