Barcelona have signed Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal on a five-year deal for a fee of £15 million.
But was £15 million a good price for the centre-back?
The Belgian spent five years at the Emirates, where he made over 100 appearances for the club following his transfer from Ajax in 2009.
Vermaelen, who captained the side for the past two seasons, made a significant impact on the side in his first season at the Emirates, but spent the majority of the previous campaign on the bench, with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker preferred over the Belgium international by Arsene Wenger.
As a result, the defender, who had one year left to run on his current contract, decided not to enter negotiations over a new deal and end his time at Arsenal.
Manchester United were interested in Vermaelen, but the player opted to join Barcelona for the foreseeable future after passing a medical.
Personally, for a player who made just 14 starts (seven in the Premier League) I believe our club have done an excellent piece of business with the sale of Vermaelen.
And at the age of 28, we looked to have got the best out of him. He wasn’t going to start for us this season and for £15 million, it was an offer that we couldn’t refuse, especially with him only having one more year left on his contract.
Good luck to Thomas at Barcelona and hopefully Wenger invests the money from his sale in a centre-back before the summer transfer window closes.

Your comment is stupid. Of course Sanchez was more than verm. But that makes Sanchez cost only 15 mil instead of 30. Pretty sure we made out better unless I’m the dumb one and not you.
true, but considering Vermaelen wouldn’t even get a game with us and could leave on a free next season then we get Sanchez for roughly £15m, absolute bargain.
I was thinking of Overmars,Petit,van Bronkhorst,Henry,Song,Hleb,Fabregas. Well over £100m with Vermaelen.

I am overjoyed he has gone to Spain.Imagine he is part of a resurgent MU under
Van Gaal though there is no guarantee.
Hopefully Wenger can finally prove his critics wrong. I still believe the defence is an area of concern.
