Arsenal are in search of a new defender after offloading Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona for £15 million.
A number of centre-backs have been linked with a move to the Emirates as a result, which include the likes of Kostas Manolas and Liverpool’s Daniel Agger.
However, another name that’s been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer is Toby Alderweireld of Atletico Madrid.
The versatile Belgian, who can play in the centre of midfield and defence as well as a right-back, is reportedly being tracked by Liverpool and Spurs and newly Arsenal.
And the trio have all been given a boost in their pursuit of the 25-year-old as his father confirmed that the defender will be leaving Atletico:
Vic Alderweireld told Het Nieuwsblad, as reported by the Metro:
‘Toby wants to play. A transfer is the best option.’
‘We have had several discussions on this issue and Atletico understand and believe it makes no sense for Toby to have another year on the bench.’
The La Liga side are thought to want £10 million for the Belgium international, and with Arsene Wenger looking to strengthen his side before the summer transfer window, the Frenchman may well be contacting Diego Simeone over a deal for Alderweireld.
I’m sure he isn’t on top of everyone’s list this summer, but he would be a decent signing for the Gunners due to the versatility he offers.
