Kostas Manolas Arsenal have set their sights on Olympiacos centre-back Kostas Manolas and could make a move for the Greek international if Thomas Vermaelen departs the Emirates this summer.

Vermaelen struggled to cement a regular spot in Arsene Wenger’s side last season with Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker being the Frenchman’s first choice defensive partnership.

As a result, the Belgian centre-back’s future is in serious doubt at the Emirates and with his contract running out, Manchester United are offering around £10 million for his services.

But should Vermaelen move on this summer then Arsenal will be left with just two senior centre-backs to call upon, leaving Wenger to ponder a move for a replacement. And the Frenchman is reportedly considering a swoop for Manolas.

The 23-year-old had a great season for Olympiacos last season and performed well during the World Cup for the Greeks.

With a valuation of around £8 million, Manolas, who still has two years left to run on his existing contract, would represent an astute signing by Wenger.

Juventus are also said to be interested in Manolas, who is known for his strength, reading of the game and superb positioning.

If Vermaelen is going then Manolas would be an ideal replacement in my view.
