‘I think it would be a backward step to bring him back’

Cesc FabregasCesc Fabregas looks set to leave Barcelona this summer and the Spaniard has of course been linked back with a move to Arsenal.

However, Arsene Wenger has hinted that despite having first option to buy-back Fabregas, the Frenchman will not bring the 26-year-old midfielder back to the Emirates, even if many of the Arsenal faithful believe it would be a fantastic move by the club.

Undoubtedly, Fabregas’ departure from his boyhood club will more than likely fill the back pages from now until the end of the summer transfer window. But while many Gooners would love to see the Spaniard back in the red and white of Arsenal, one former Gunner by the name of Stewart Robson believes the club would be taking a ‘backward step’ and ignoring the more pressing matter of signing a defensive midfielder instead.

Robson said on the matter:

‘I’m not sure Fabregas would be the right player for Arsenal. He was brilliant for Arsenal but the last year or so he started to – a bit like [Thierry] Henry did – do what he wanted to do rather than being a team player.

‘I think it would be a backward step to bring him back in. I think he would probably be better off going to Liverpool or Manchester United.’

He went on to say that Wenger should focus on signing a more defensive midfielder in the mould of Daniel De Rossi:

‘What Arsenal do need is a holding midfield player. [Mikel] Arteta, as good a passer of the ball as he is, he is not athletic enough. He had Denilson a few years ago who couldn’t run at pace.

‘It’s a big problem area for Arsenal they have to rectify. They have to get a strong midfield player, a good defensive midfielder who can play as well.

‘In Italy we talk about De Rossi who plays for Roma. I’m sure he’s not going to come to Arsenal but that’s the sort of player they need.’

I concur with Robson that we could do with a midfield enforcer coming in, one that is strong and can protect the back four. While Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are decent, they don’t have legs they used to and signing someone that can come in and make an impact in this area would be phenomenal.

As for taking a ‘backward step’ by re-signing Fabregas? I just don’t see how bringing the Spaniard back home is detrimental in any way to the club. He knows the club extremely well, has an abundance of Premier League experience and is undoubtedly one of Europe’s best midfielder.

@TT, you just spoke my mind. that robson man is not an arsenal fan, so he wants fab to play against us in the league from our rivals?

that assessment by stewart Robson just goes to show that being an ex-player in no way proves that you are an expert of the game. his is just an opinion and a very illogical one indeed. at 26 cesc is just entering the age when footballers really come into their on- combining experience and skill to influence games. the comparison with thierry is warped. in his last two years thierry was looking for greener pastures or rather a new experience. the coming back of Cesc to the emirates most likely would see the player give everything to the course. He has already been to the greener pastures and seen that grass is not always greener on the other side. in him arsenal would get a another flamini – on mission unfinished business !

I don’t know if getting Fab back is a serious option– but if it is– only a madman would prefer Caz, Ros or Jack to Fab in our ‘first’ team. But they will be needed as back-up when first teamers are kicked to bits as usual. This next season the result managers are going to have their work cut out to stop us. If Fab is available– get him signed!!!

Sell Rosicky, Arteta and Flamini as they are getting on. Bring back Cesc and buy a DM and a striker.

  • Antique Gunmen says:

Screw Robinson! We need our midfield sector as deep as possible. That’s one factor who dropped our performances in last part of last season. One CDM is also urgently need.
Besides, no gooners or Cesc himself would like to see him as a rivals player.
