Is he really worth splashing out £40M on?

|

Julian DraxlerThere has been a lot of talk about Arsenal stepping up their chase in Schalke’s Julian Draxler and reports are suggesting that the club are preparing to trigger his reported £40 million release clause to acquire him.

Arsene Wenger has been monitoring the 20-year-old’s progress for quite sometime now and was linked with a move for the German starlet last summer.

But it is thought Wenger could make a swoop for Draxler this month because waiting until the summer might prove more difficult for the Frenchman to acquire the Schalke playmaker as his value could potentially skyrocket should he have an impressive World Cup campaign with Germany.

He has been hailed as one of Germany’s brightest stars and is expected to go on to bigger and better things as the years roll by.

But is Draxler REALLY worth £40 million?

One cannot doubt Draxler’s ability. At 20, the German has captivated the world of football with his talent and has rapidly become one of the best performers in the Bundesliga in such a short space of time.

Draxler has been with Schalke since 2001 and has progressed in their youth ranks; it was in 2011 that he made the breakthrough to the first-team where he has impressed since.

To date, Draxler has made 130 appearances in all competitions for Schalke, contributing 25 goals and 18 assists. His stats may not make you sit up and take notice, but considering he is an attacking midfielder and only 20 years of age, its bloody impressive.

His performances for Schalke over the last two seasons have been so impressive they have caught the eye of Germany’s head coach Joachim Low. Draxler has been capped 10 times for the senior national side and will almost certainly be apart of Low’s World Cup squad this summer.

Despite his stratospheric potential and ability, Draxler still has a lot to learn, and many will believe that £40 million, even for a player of his talent, is a huge amount of money for a young star. With that being said, however, £40 million, to some, may perhaps be viewed as a bargain in this day and age – especially if his value rises considerably as he develops further.

However, this particular Arsenal fan wants to err on the side of caution on this potential deal.

Although Draxler is a future star in the game, £40 million for a player so young, whoever it may be, is a huge risk for Wenger to take – regardless of the potential in question.

Having seen Draxler perform a few times in the past and this season for Schalke, sorry guys but I’m not convinced he’s worth £40 million. We’re talking about a fee which was paid to Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil last summer, a world-class footballer – is The Drax on the same level as his countryman?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t sign him, but perhaps splashing out £40 million on Draxler should methodically be thought through before rushing into it.

Not for me. Like the writer said, you can use that money elsewhere or put it towards a more established player

i’m from germany, watch him often playing for schalke. And i dont think he is worth so much money.

he plays good. he is young. but he is no world-class. i dont know if he will be in future, but not in the next years.
he often gets good critic cause the rest of the team schalke plays rubbish and he plays a little bit better. But not great.

also he has some good skills and a nice dribbling but no strength.

For less money Marin & Holtby joined the premier league last years. hyped as great talents. where are they now? dont think draxler is that much better that he is 40m worth.

Agree with the writer. What if we buy him and he doesnt adapt well to the league? Good player but not worth his value

I would much rather spend that kind of money on marco reus, or diego costa.

Arsene Wenger should think twice before splashing the £40m on the lad…

I realy doubt he’s worth this amount atleast not 4 now at just 20years old. Why not Luis Suarez of Liverpool? If it means 50mil 4 suarez? The risk is worth taking!
