Who should Wenger bring in if reinforcements are needed this winter?

Arsene WengerIt’s a good start to the campaign wouldn’t you say? A strong squad at our disposal barring injuries and yet we are set to experience an influx of even more high-profile signings as Arsene Wenger looks to add to what is an already talented group of players.

A few days ago, Wenger was asked if he would improve the squad during January, the Frenchman replied:

‘If they are needed, then yes. If it’s just for marketing reasons, then no. But for football reasons, why not.

‘It’s a big responsibility to spend that amount of money. But I feel comfortable with it because we had the money to do it.

‘Before we couldn’t have done it because we didn’t have the money available. It’s as simple as that.’

He was then asked if new faces would be arriving at the Emirates over the winter, he said:

‘I don’t rule it out.

‘I don’t rule it out at all, but saying that I don’t want to encourage more speculation. We have just come out of a transfer market that has been very agitated, so let’s not go into the next one today!

‘I just want to focus on football now.’

A January signing isn’t unlikely and his approach to it is admirable – playing down speculation to prevent unsettling some of the players at the club already who maybe at risk of losing their role come the New Year.

What would the gaffer consider as ‘football reasons?’ an addition to help with a title charge? One to buck up a few of the players’ ideas? Whatever the case another quality signing would be more than welcomed. And I for one would be pleased to see a world class forward, midfielder, defender or experienced goalie come in.

We’ve been linked with the likes of Lars Bender, Asmir Begovic and Karim Benzema recently – any of them would surely add a lot to the squad and would no doubt fill the football reasons category in my book.

To pick out a specific category in case we needed to strengthen is hard. We’re light up front despite having two quality strikers in Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud. We are still a little weak in midfield in terms of physicality, though Mathieu Flamini is holding down the fort well, he does need some support. And we could use another defender coming in with Thomas Vermaelen looking like he may be surplus to requirements.

But I think it all depends on what shape we are in come January.

Do we need reinforcements this January? If so, who would you like to see come in?

I’d say try for Lewandowski. It’s a long shot but maybe. If not I think Demba Ba is a low expense back up for Giroud and can be a dangerous 70 min sub to change playing styles. Also, I’m a huge fan of both Gundogan and Reus. Maybe Gundogan in January and Reus in the Summer. Wishful but would make us as good as Barca if not better in mid. Reus can play out wide and Gundogan can rotate into any of the 3 CMs. We will see. Technically we don’t need any new additions if everyone’s healthy. Podolski can rotate up top to rest Giroud. We can win the league as now but will need a few more top players to win Champions League.

Bring Costa is fantastic also impassible because I don’t believe they will sale him then Benzema is our best option, I love to see Falcao too. Anyway we have to wait and trust in Wenger.

In answer to your question–History says that it is a waste of time guessing. But that doesn’t stop thefairy stories. Already there have been 37 players ‘linked’ to us. It is interesting to note that no-one ‘tipped’ Ozil, Sonogo or Flamini although there were about 150 other ‘certainties’ that went down the pan.
    Give us a break!

I would love to see lewandoski but if we are being realistic I think a 50m bid for benzema and khedira would be money well spent.
