GonalonsLyon have told Arsenal to forget about signing Maxime Gonalons this summer.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to The Emirates and Arsene Wenger is believed to be looking to add a holding midfield to his squad, with Abou Diaby sidelined until December, and has reportedly targeted the Frenchman.

Napoli are also thought to be chasing Gonalons as well, but according to a statement on Lyon’s official website – as written in the Daily Express – the club have no intention of parting ways with their captain.

‘Olympique Lyonnais were very surprised to read in L’Equipe this morning that we would set a transfer figure for Maxime Gonalons and that it would be more than €12 million.

‘The club have no intention of parting with our captain and this is a matter of clear strategy, namely the further development of our club around our best young players from the academy of which Maxime Gonalons is one of the best examples.

‘The club therefore deny any contact and any negotiations with Napoli and regret any suggestion otherwise, as suggested in this newspaper.’

Gonalons was ever-present for Lyon last season, making 42 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 club and also found the net four times along the way.

A few weeks ago, Remi Garde said neither Gonalons or Clement Grenier, who has also been linked with a move to Arsenal, are not for sale. So this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone reading the same thing.

To be honest, as much as Gonalons is a good player, I would rather see our club spend a little more money and bring in Marouane Fellaini – a player who would suit our style of play and already has Premier League experience under his belt.

Lyon’s hands-off warning should only spur Wenger to go all out for Fellaini, in my opinion.
