Arsenal are keeping an eye on Benfica full-back Lorenzo Melgarejo and have enquired about his availability, according to the player’s agent.
The 22-year-old enjoyed an impressive first season with Benfica, making a total of 21 appearances and contributing two goals and an assist.
And the Paraguayan’s agent, Juan Gabriel Appleyard, states his client’s displays have attracted the attentions of both Arsenal and Fenerbahce.
Appleyard said:
‘Arsenal and Fenerbahce have enquired about Melgarejo. But so far there has been nothing concrete.’
Despite already having Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal on the books at Arsenal, it seems Arsene Wenger would like to add Melgarejo to his squad and play him in a more advanced role to challenge the likes of Lukas Podolski for a starting place.
However, it looks like nothing much will develop here for us as Melgarejo newly extended his contract at the Estadio Da Luz, which expires in 2018. It is believed Benfica installed a minimum fee release clause in the player’s deal which stands at £25.5 million.
Despite having the cash to spend this summer, Wenger will simply not meet Melgarejo’s valuation. Besides, do we really need another left-sided player coming in this summer? I don’t think so.
