Wenger hints at shock move for unsettled United ace

|

Wayne RooneyArsene Wenger has hinted that he could well make a sensational swoop for Wayne Rooney this summer.

The 27-year-old striker is unsettled at Old Trafford and handed in a transfer request at the end of the season.

Chelsea, Bayern Munich and PSG are all reportedly interested in signing the England international with the Ligue 1 club ready to offer the striker in the region of £300k-a-week.

A move for Rooney truly looks out of reach for Arsenal, especially with the rich clubs keen on the United man.

However, Wenger, who has been promised at least £70 million to splash this summer, is ready to pounce if Rooney becomes available.

The Frenchman admitted:

‘Rooney could be an interesting player for everybody in the world, who would turn him down?

‘David Moyes’ first challenge is to go in to Manchester and bridge the gap between him and Rooney.

‘If that is feasible or not depends on his personality. We will see.

‘It will be interesting to see how that will be handled.’

Like I’ve stated before, we could afford to buy Rooney. This isn’t the problem. The stumbling block in this potential deal would be his wages. I just can’t see Wenger handing him, or any other player for that matter, £250-300k-a-week.

I don’t think Wenger would baulk at the wages. He paid Henry 100k+ to stay one last season and Sol was also on 100k+. Those salaries were equivalent 200k now.

He’ll justify it the way he always does with a basic salary comparable to other squad members, but a massive signing-on fee and bonuses over the course of the deal so Rooney earns 200k plus overall, but is on a salary of 120k – something like that, so officially the wage structure is being respected.
