After a dramatic end to the season which saw Arsenal clinch fourth place and plunge Spurs into the Europa League again (where they deserve to be) it is now time for Arsene Wenger to step his game up and deliver what we all want next season – silverware.
But in order to challenge for trophies – the Premier League especially – Wenger HAS to spend big and sign the quality players to take us to the next level.
The Frenchman is widely known for his frugalness in the market, selling our top players in the past few summers and replacing them with not necessarily poor buys, but not of the same quality that has left the club that year.
We are to believe that restrictions, in terms of debt and our wage bill, have seen Wenger not whip out his cheque book and spend large fees on top quality in the past. This may have well been the case, but this does not excuse the fact that the club have had money to spend. Whether this is because Wenger was unwilling to do so or the board wouldn’t sanction is up for debate.
However, it seems this summer may well be different.
Reportedly, debts (the stadium in particular) have finally been paid off and they are making profits year in, year out in all departments.
The club, I believe, have cash reserves of up to £123 million, recently struck a £170 million kit deal with Puma (the biggest in English football history) and Wenger has been promised by Ivan Gazidis at least £70 million to spend over the summer. So, in theory, there are no excuses, no place to hide for Wenger this year.
We have a very good squad as it is. But if Wenger wants to challenge for the Premier League title next season, like he said he does, then the Frenchman must go out this summer and add to what he currently has at the club. I’m not saying he should go City-like and spend millions on ‘names’, however, he should look to compete with the other big clubs for the big players.
I believe we are about 3-4 players short of a title challenging side. As I’ve said, we have a good core at the club and the players are working for each other which is great to see. But if we can sign the right players, spend big and add to this existing squad this summer then I honestly believe we can contend for the title next season.
We don’t want to be settling for a top four finish every season. We are better than that. But its now up to Wenger to prove to us and the world that he wants the same things as we (the fans) do, and in order to do this the Frenchman MUST look to spend big and bring in the quality.

Wenger is still the business.As Graeme Souness recently opined to get this team into the champions league is a marvellous feat of management.Anyway adding 3 or 4 good players will get us right back in the mix for next year.Id alsi specifically target the league cup to get the trophy monkey off our back
