Ex-Gunner reckons Arsenal could be in ‘major trouble’ if Spurs beat Liverpool

|

Arsene WengerArsenal currently sit fifth in the Premier League, five points adrift of fourth placed Chelsea and seven behind Spurs.

There are still 10 games left to play and anything can still happen from now until the end of the season. But The Gunners will need to turn their fortunes around and find some form quickly if they want to secure a top four finish, that’s for sure.

While many Arsenal fans (including myself) still believe they can attain a Champions League qualification spot, former Gunner Paul Merson reckons Arsene Wenger’s side will be fighting for fourth place with Spurs, despite Chelsea currently occupying the spot.

However, Merson, who spent 12 years at Arsenal, believes the fight for fourth place could well be over if Spurs pick up all three points against a resurgent Liverpool side tomorrow afternoon at Anfield.

The former England international recently said:

‘The next two games are the biggest of the whole season – Tottenham have got a difficult game at Liverpool and Arsenal go to Swansea.’

He added:

‘If Tottenham win this weekend and go ten points clear, Arsenal are in major trouble.’

Unfortunately, I would have to agree with Merse on this one. If Spurs go ten points ahead of us, I can’t see our side recovering from it. Mentally, the lads will be under so much pressure to deliver and Swansea away (next Saturday) isn’t exactly a walk in the park.

Hopefully Liverpool do us a big favour tomorrow afternoon and we capitalise on it next weekend. I will be sick as a dog if Liverpool manage to pick up all three points tomorrow and we get a negative result at The Liberty Stadium!

Will the fight fourth be over if Spurs beat Liverpool?

No abuse intended from me here and have just looked at it in a slightly different way. I’ve looked at what sort of points your lot need from the last 10 games and also what we need to achieve to get to the level of points that’s needed for 4th generally (average over the last 5 years).

You need 8 wins from 10 matches I reckon. Do you think you can or do expect to get them? We probably need 5 wins and a draw. I know which is the more achievable to be honest. I’m kind of with Merson, although if we lose it it won’t be the end of the world whereas if you do then it’s probably curtains.

I wouldn’t worry Arsenal fans. I fancy Spurs to finish third but I think Merson is dreaming if he thinks Chelsea are gonna finish strongly; he would rather never do a line of coke again than give Spurs any credit. Have you actually watched Chelsea play recently? Half the team play slowly and the other half try and play fast. It’s a bloody shambles! Chelsea to miss out for me.

I agree with Merson. The problem is if Pool beat Spurs,Arsenal will contrive to lose/draw at Swansea.Nothing is cast in stone but I have my doubts about this Arsenal team who are liable to go to sleep as in the Spurs game.
I personally believ if Spurs win and Arsenal lose,it’s game over.

Spurs have some difficult fixtures but i still fancy them to finish second or third. As an arsenal fan id be more inclined to target chelski who appear to be playing even worse than we are.Such, however,is the mediocrity(sorry excitement) of the “worlds best league” that it wouldnt suprise me if we wound up in third again

well we have all watched arsenal go downhill over the last few seasons and yet Wenger maintains we have the squad. Well nows the time to see if he was right and he will need all the team to pull together and the coaching needs to be watertight particularly in the defensive areas. To me we dont have the quality to sustain a run and we dont beleive in ourselves anymore. Spurs have a hold on the third space and the fourth spot depends on who is motivated and strong enough to get that spot. The danger is if we do we will have to put up with another make do season next year. If we dont we wont sign qulaity players if we are not in the cl unless they sign with sell on clauses for the following season. Time will tell but i for one just think we havent got enough to go on a run and ive seen a few ups and downs over the last 40 years to make a guesstimate on this. I hope im wrong of course! If we dont qualify i feel the board are responsible for either not supporting with funds or not getting rid of wenger if he doesnt deliver.

arsenal will not finish in the top four, they win one loose one, and the way spurs look it’s almost impossible, as long as wegner keep usin walcot and ramsey, istead of podolsky and rosicky, and the ox, I donn’t see them advansing!!!
