Wolfsburg are weighing up a summer move for Per Mertesacker, according to reports in Germany.
The 28-year-old centre-back has been a regular fixture in Arsene Wenger’s side this season, keeping Laurent Koscielny mainly on the bench. But the lanky German has come under some criticism from fans and pundits alike in recent times and could make a return to his homeland, where he is highly rated, with Wolfsburg understood to be keen.
Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs worked with Mertesacker when he was at Werder Bremen, and is believed to be eager with working with him once again.
The Gunners have already been linked with a number of defenders this summer, including Athletic Bilbao’s Fernando Amorebieta and Swansea’s Ashley Williams, which could lead, according to German magazine Kicker Sportmagazin, to Mertesacker’s departure.
Personally, I just don’t see this happening, especially as we are already short of options at the back!
I like Per and think he has settled in well at Arsenal. He is by far the best defender on our books who reads the game the best and his positioning is just as good. Yes he lacks pace, but he is a consistent performer and his centre-back partner accommodates for him.

You dont get 75 odd caps for germany by being unable to play.So keep a hold of him for a while.Vermaelen can either go into midfield or off to barcelona as hes not capable of organizing the back four effectively. One final thing, please keep szcezny in goal
